U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Burritt College Tennessee, in 1887, moved to Texas, taught school, served as superintendent of the city schools of Vernon, (1889-91), studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1893 and commenced to practice law in Wichita Falls, Texas. He was city attorney of Wichita Falls, (1894-95). In 1913, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-third Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1921. He was again elected to the Seventy-second, Seventy-third and Seventy-fourth Congresses, serving (1933-37). After his term, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 92.
