U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Wofford College in 1893, from the University of South Carolina in 1897, and then taught school in several counties of South Carolina. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1901, and commenced to practice law in Greenville, South Carolina. During World War I, he served as a Captain in command of Company A, 154th Infantry, U.S. Army. After the war, he resumed the practice of law, entered politics, and was elected in 1921 as a Democrat to the Sixty-seventh Congress and to the next seven succeeding Congresses, serving until his death.
