US Congressman. Immigrating to America, he was working as a journalist and served in the US Navy during the Civil War. After the war, he studied law, was as admitted to the bar and proceeded to practice law in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1867. He was a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives, (1868-1870) and was the first African American Commanding General of South Carolina National Guard, (1869-71). In 1871, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-second and Forty-third Congresses, serving until his resignation in 1874. He was a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives, (1874-76), then relocated to Louisiana, in 1881 and practiced law until his death at age 41.
