Hall of Fame Sports Broadcaster. Longtime voice of Georgia Bulldogs' football (1966 until 2008). He attended Moorehead State Teachers College (Minnesota) and following his service with the US Military during World War II, he chose to embark upon a career in broadcasting. He financed his education at broadcasting school with his discharge pay and experienced his first job at a tiny radio station in Devil's Lake, North Dakota. After several other broadcasting assignments, he ended up in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he met and formed a lifelong friendship with Curt Gowdy. It would be Gowdy who recommended Munson for his announcing position at the University of Wyoming, after his departure to call minor league baseball games in Oklahoma City and when Gowdy moved onto the New York Yankees in 1949, once again through Gowdy's good words, Munson succeeded him. This was followed with additional minor league announcing assignments and a return to collegiate sports, calling both Vanderbilt University's football and basketball contests. Munson's big break was in 1966, when he landed broadcasting duties with the Atlanta Braves, after their relocation from Milwaukee and that same year, succeeded Ed Thilenius as play-by-play man with the Georgia Bulldogs, a capacity he held for 42-years, highlighted by their National Championship run in 1980. His versatility allowed for him to call the school's basketball contests (1987 to 1996) and from 1989 to 1992, he served on radio broadcasts with the Atlanta Falcons. His body of work was acknowledged by the College Football Hall of Fame, as recipient of the Chris Schenkel Award in 2003 and in 2005 he was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. Munson died from complication of pneumonia.
