US Congressman. A native of Belmont County, Ohio, he began his career as an educator in the Ohio villages of Antrim and Fairview before leaving Guernsey County to attend law school in Cincinnati. In 1860 he returned to eastern Ohio settling in Cambridge to begin his law practice. In 1861 he also entered the newspaper business becoming owner of the ‘Guernsey Times." He owned the paper for ten years. During the Civil War he joined the Union army as a captain in the Eighty-eighth Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. After the war he served as a prosecuting attorney and on the Cambridge City School Board before being elected to Congress in 1883 to fulfill an unexpired term. He represented his Ohio district in the Forty-Seventh and Forty-eighth Congress (from 1883 to 1885) and the Fiftieth through the Fiftieth-Second Congress (from 1887 to 1893). A loyal Republican and an active member of the temperance movement he returned to Cambridge and remained active in public service until his death.
