Presidential Cabinet Secretary. During the War of 1812 he served as a Colonel in the Pennsylvania Militia, and commanded the garrison at Fort Mifflin, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A member of the Pennsylvania State Bar Association, he was one of the main founders of Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, where he served as a law professor. In 1843 he was appointed by President John Tyler to serve as United States Secretary of War, an office he held until January 1844.
