World War I Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Private in the 3rd Battalion, Victoria Border Regiment. At Rouges Bancs, France, on December 21, 1914, Private Smith and another private voluntarily went out from their trench and rescued a wounded man. On the same day they again left their trench under heavy fire to bring in another wounded man to safety. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal.
