US Senator, US Congressman. He was a teacher at Jericho Academy, when he studied law, admitted to the bar in 1836 and proceeded to practice law in Morrisville, Vermont. He was register of probate (1839-40), a member of the Vermont State constitutional convention in 1843, prosecuting attorney of Lamoille County (1844-45) and chief justice judge of the supreme court of Vermont 1848-1865. In 1865, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Jacob Collamer, serving until 1867. That same year he was elected as a Republican to the Fortieth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving (1867-75). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives in 1878, trustee of the University of Vermont and president of the First National Bank of St. Johnsbury. In 1883, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-eighth Congress, serving until 1885. He died at age 71 at his home in Waterville, Vermont.
