Vignette #1: Anne loved hiking and camping in the mountains: our parents hiked the entire trail system around Mount Rainier over the course of several years. She was also proactive about environmental care (engaging her children in roadside clean-up activities way ahead of the current environmental activism).
Vignette #2: Delmer and Anne raised chickens. One night while pregnant and unable to sleep, she took an outdoor walk. Opening the door of the chicken-house to look up the stairs, a pair of beady eyes returned her gaze. A skunk had been helping itself to our eggs. In her situation in the night, it wasn't the best time to deal with the skunk and she quickly departed.
Vignette #3: Anne spent a good deal of time in the garden while pregnant with the youngest. She had spoken of her plan to wash her feet before giving birth, but that didn't work out. She was in the garden just before her water broke, and the hasty trip to the hospital provided no clean-up time. This wonderful information was provided by her loving daughter Elaine.
