Queen of Sicily and Sardinia. Anne Marie d'Orléans, daughter of Philippe I, Duke of Orléans, and his wife Princess Henrietta Anne of England, was born at the Château de Saint-Cloud in France. Her mother died less than a year after her birth, and she was raised by her stepmother, Elizabeth Charlotte, Princess Palatine. Her uncle Louis XIV arranged her marriage to Victor Amadeus II of Savoy, then Duke of Savoy. A proxy marriage took place at Versailles on April 10, 1684, when Anne Marie was 14 years old. She met her husband on May 6th, the day of their wedding in Savoy. The marriage produced eight children. Their oldest child was Marie Adélaïde, who married Louis, Duke of Burgundy (the grandson of Louis XIV), and gave birth to the future Louis XV. Their third child, Maria Luisa, married King Philip V of Spain. Despite the strong ties to France, Anne Marie's husband Victor Amadeus was on the side opposing France in the War of the Spanish Succession. When the war ended in 1713, Victor Amadeus received the Kingdom of Sicily, and Anne Marie became queen. Her husband was forced to exchange Sicily for Sardinia in 1720. Queen Anne Marie died at her villa, the Villa della Regina, on the day before her 59th birthday. She was interred at the Basilica of Superga in Turin. She played an important part in British history with regard to Jacobite succession. For a period of six years, from 1714 to 1720, she was the heir presumptive to the Jacobite claim to the English, Scottish, and Irish thrones. She was displaced by the birth of Charles Edward Stuart. But, as both he and his brother died without legitimate issue, her descendants would have inherited the Jacobite claim. However, the Act of Settlement excluded the claims of Catholics and settled the throne on the nearest Protestant relatives.
