U.S. Congressman. Moving to Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1840, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1843 and commenced to practice law in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was prosecuting attorney for Milwaukee County in 1846, Attorney General of Wisconsin, (1848-49) and Mayor of Milwaukee, in 1861. In 1863, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-eighth Congress, serving until 1865. Defeated for reelection, he moved to Europe, for health reasons. Returning to the United States, in 1873, he practiced law until his death at age 54.
