French Royalty, Military Commander. Henri Eugène Philippe Louis d'Orléans, son of Louis Philippe, Duke of Orléans, and his wife Maria Amalia of Naples and Sicily, was born at the Palais-Royal in Paris. He was the ninth child and fifth son of the marriage. At birth, he received the title of Duke of Aumale. His father became the King of the French, and his mother was the daughter of King Ferdinand I of Naples and Sicily. At the age of eight, Henri inherited a fortune from his godfather, Louis Henri de Bourbon, the last Prince of Condé. He married Princess Maria Carolina Augusta on November 25, 1844. The marriage produced four children, two of whom survived to adulthood. At the age of seventeen, Henri had entered the military. He served with distinction during the French invasion of Algeria, and was appointed Governor-General of Algeria. After the Revolution of 1848, he was exiled to England. It was in Twickenham, near London, that his wife Maria Carolina died from tuberculosis in 1869. Henri did not remarry. After his exile ended, he resumed his rank as a general in the French army in 1872. The following year, he presided over the court martial of General François Achille Bazaine, Marshall of France. By 1879, he had become inspector-general of the army. In 1886, a law was passed which exiled all the heads of former reigning families. The Duke of Aumale left France. However, his will of 1884 had bequeathed to the Institut of France the Château de Chantilly, with one of the finest art collections in France. This led the government to withdraw its mandate of exile. Henri returned to France in 1889 and died in Zucco, Sicily in 1897. He was interred in the Chapelle Royale de Dreux in France, which had been renovated and renamed by his father.
