Luis Donaldo Colosio campaigned against his own party vowing to clean up corruption and abuse of power. During a political rally attended by thousands in Tijuana, Mexico, a gunman while standing inches away from him put a bullet through his head and torso. A self made man, he had come far since his birth to poor ranchers in Magdalena del Kino located on the Sonoran Desert. He received a scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania majoring in economics. He became a college professor, entered politics and was elected to the Mexican congress followed by governmental appointments culminating as Secretary of Social Development. He was the hand picked PRI candidate of outgoing President Carlos Salinas. After his assassination, his remains were transported to his birthplace for burial. There is a man serving time for the crime, however the theories of a conspiracy remain.
