Civil War Union Army Officer. The son of former New Jersey Governor Daniel Haines, he was trained as a lawyer, and was admitted to the New Jersey Bar. After the outbreak of the Civil War, he received a commission of 1st Lieutenant in Company K of the 1st New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry on August 15, 1861. He served in this capacity until March 1862, when he was promoted to Captain and transferred to commmand the unit's Company M, replacing Captain John P. Fowler, who was discharged. He led his command through the early cavalry operations in the Shenandoah Valley. On June 6, 1862, he was killed in action near Harrisonburg, Virginia when his regiment was impulsively ordered to attack Confederate forces. Sabered and shot, his body wasn't recovered by his comrades until the next day, when it was found and buried in a churchyard in Harrisonburg. His father, Governor Haines, then had his remains brought back to his home state, where it lies in the Haines Family plot.
