John R. Olney Sr. was born on January 10, 1822 in Shawneetown, Gallatin County, Illinois. His parents were Nathan Olney and Huldah Mahony. He married Eliza L. Ridgway (daughter of John Ridgway and Mary Fraser Grant) on February 2, 1853 in Gallatin County, Illinois. They had four children named Nathan, Mary G. (Mrs. Frank Helton Morrical), Florence (Mrs. George Signor Bush), and John R Jr.. John Sr. was a lawyer in Chicago. He died on October 6, 1900 at John Jr's house.

OLDEST CHICAGO LAWYER PASSES AWAY AT AGE OF 97 [Should be 78]. Death Comes at the Home of His Son, 223 Oakwood Boulevard, Following Stroke of Paralysis Received While Leaving His Office on Wednesday--Last of the Illinois Electors of Lincoln--Was a Native of Shawneetown. Served in Civil War. Was a Lincoln Elector. Came of Well-Known Family.
