Actor. His most lasting film role was that of 'Kemmerick' the tragic amputation victim in the film "All Quiet on the Western Front," although he is best remembered for his eight years in the television role of Officer Frank Smith, Sgt. Friday's partner in "Dragnet." He appeared in 81 films from the 1910s to the 1960s, making his screen debut at age 5 in "Every Pearl a Tear." He was more or less retired when producer Jack Webb picked him for the part of his partner Officer Frank Smith in the TV series Dragnet (1952 to 1959). He acted in 255 episodes as well as the Dragnet radio show, running separate episodes, that ran until 1957. He was awarded three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for television, radio, and movies. He also owned and operated two Ford dealerships, one in Highland Park and the other on Potrero Street in San Francisco.
