Musician. Dubbed "The Brute" or "Frog", he was one of the most influential jazz tenor saxophonist of the swing era. Through the 1930s to early 1950s, he played with and recorded with orchestras to include Bennie Moten, Count Basie, Oran Page, Walter Page, Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington. In 1964, he moved permanently to Europe to join other American jazz musicians in performing and touring the continent until his death.
