13th Denver Mayor. He enlisted in 4th Virginia Cavalry in September 1861; his unit participated in various battles at Willimaburg, Manassas, Fredericksburg and in the Shenandoah Valley. Upon surrender in April 1865, only 20 of the original 450 members were present. After release from POW camp, Buckingham relocated with his family to Denver, Kansas Territory, where he was a successful physician and became the first president of the Denver Medical Society and the Colorado Medical Society. He was a member of the Territorial Senate; served as Denver School Board president for six years (he founded Denver's first high school); and helped establish the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind in Colorado Springs. Elected mayor for two terms from 1876 to 1877.
