Actor. Born Richard James Biggs in Columbus, Ohio, the only son of an Air Force Colonel and his wife. He grew up in an a active military family, living all over the Midwest. At the age of 13, he was diagnosed with hearing loss, profoundly deaf in one ear and partially deaf in the other. He won a scholarship to the University of Southern California School of Theatre where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts. He made his television debut in 1985 with a bit role in the John Ritter series 'Three's a Crowd.' More such roles followed in various series such as 'T.J. Hooker,' 'Stingray,' 'The Twilight Zone,' 'Falcon Crest,' and 'Beauty and the Beast,' before he was cast as Dr. Marcus Hunter, his first significant role, on the daytime drama 'Days of Our Lives.' He was cast in his signature role, Dr Steven Franklin, in the 1993 television series 'Babylon 5'. The series ran from 1994 to 1998, and was followed the television movies 'Babylon 5: River of Souls,' in 'Babylon 5: A Call to Arms,' and reprising the role a final time in the final aired episode of the spin-off series, 'Crusade' in 1999. He arranged for the B5 cast to visit Rancho Viejo School for the deaf and hearing-impaired for a fund raising event, which attracted fans from around the country, allowing them to purchase playground and other equipment. From 1998 to 2000 he appeared in the series 'Any Day Now,' and in 2002, he was again cast as a doctor in the series 'Strong Medicine.' At the age of 44, he collapsed at home and was taken to hospital, where he died as a result of a tear in his aorta. It was decided that his character in 'Strong Medicine,' Milo Morton, would also meet an untimely and tragic death rather than be recast. His final television appearance was an episode of the children's series, 'Drake and Josh' entitled 'The Gary Grill.' It was dedicated in his memory.
