Altgeld, Mary (Lehnhart) -- Mrs. Mary Altgeld, mother of Gov. John P. Altgeld, of Illinois, died quite suddenly at her home in Washington Township at 10 o'clock last night. Mrs. Altgeld has been indisposed for some weeks but was feeling much better yesterday forenoon. About 2:30 o'clock she sustained an attack of paralysis and lingered until last night, when death relieved her. Mrs. Altgeld (nee Lehnhart) was born at Nassau, Germany, on Feb. 17th., 1822, and was therefore in her 72d. year at the time of her death. She married John Peter Altgeld in Germany and with him came to this country in 1848 and settled in Washington township. Mr. Altgeld preceded her to the "unknown land" about three years ago. The deceased was the mother of nine children, four sons and five daughters. Three daughters, all of whom live in Washington township, and one son, Gov. Altgeld of Illinois, survive her. Mrs. Altgeld when quite young united with the German Lutheran church and during her long life she has been a faithful and consistent Christian. The funeral will be held from the residence at 2 p.m. tomorrow. The bereaved have the sympathy of the entire community, as the deceased was widely known and loved. This morning Gov. Altgeld was notified of his mother's death and it is expected that he will be in attendance at the funeral. [Richland Shield & Banner: 08 July 1893]
