Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. One of the oldest field officers at the outbreak of the Civil War, he had previously fought in the War of 1812, the Florida Seminole Wars and the Mexican War in his long career. When the Civil War started, he was serving as Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st United States Regular Artillery. He was advanced to Colonel of the 2nd United States Regular Artillery, and then retired by his own request. Despite being on the retired list, he engaged in recuitment duty for the duration of the war. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "long and faithful services in the army".
