Civil War Confederate Army Brigadier General. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1846, was commissioned an officer in the 2nd United States Dragoons. He served in the Mexican-American War, and at the start of the Civil War he resigned his commission and excepted an appointment as a Major in the Confederate 1st Georgia Regular Infantry Regiment. He was promoted Colonel in command of the 20th Georgia Regiment in July, 1861 and was confirmed Brigadier General assigned to the 1st Brigade of the Confederate District of Georgia in the Department of South Carolina and Georgia in March, 1862. During this period, he led a brigade at the Battle of Secessionville and after was then given command of the First District of South Carolina, where served until his death from yellow fever.
