United States Army Brigadier General. He was the son of Civil War Brigadier General Benjamin Alvord, Sr. and a career military officer. In 1882, he graduated from the US Military Academy and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and the 20th US Infantry. After attending Cavalry School at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, he was an instructor at West Point (1887-91), fought in the Philippines Insurrection and was Adjutant General of the Department of Northern Luzon in 1901. During World War I, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal and a Silver Star Medal for his service and was Adjutant General of the American Expeditionary Forces in France, till 1918. In 1922, he was named Assistant Adjutant General of the Army at the War Department and remained in position until he retired in May 1924. He died at age 65 in Washington D.C.
