STRICKEN ON STREET, DIES IN SHORT TIME (Photo)
John Mahnke, Sr., Pioneer, Suddenly Called This Morning
John Mahnke, Sr., 1405 South Eleventh street, pioneer resident of Manitowoc
county, was stricken by death this morning while on the street on his way from
his home to the postoffice to mail Christmas parcels, and died before medical
aid could be summoned. Mr. Mahnke was found unconscious but still alive, by
Patrolman William Christensen, on the walk near St. Boniface school. He died
just as his son, John Mahnke, Jr., of Reedsville, reached the scene, the son
having missed his father at his home by a few minutes and followed him on his
way downtown.
The body was removed to the Pfeffer morgue and later today taken to
the home. The death of Mr. Mahnke proved a great shock to the aged
wife and apprehension is felt over her condition.
Pioneer Farmer of County.
Mr. Mahnke, who was born in Germany December 15, 1848, came to Manitowoc county
as a young man of 18 years and for many years was engaged in farming in the town
of Rockland on the farm now conducted by his son John Mahnke Jr. In later years
the family made their home at Reedsville and about four years ago Mr. and Mrs.
Mahnke came here to reside. A year ago the couple celebrated their golden
wedding anniversary. Mrs. Mahnke, previous to her marriage was Hulda Schneider.
Parents of 8 Children

Henry Rusch, Otto and John Mahnke, of Reedsville; the Rev. William and the Rev.

and active in its work in the county, two sons being in the ministry of the
