World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. He received the award on November 12, 1918 for his actions as a lance corporal in the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers of the British Army on September 29, 1918 at Terhand, Belgium, where he was killed in combat at the age of 25. Born near Norwich, Norfolk, England, he worked as a page boy along with a few other odd jobs before joining the British Army following the outbreak of World War I in July 1914. He originally served as a baker in the British Army Service Corps before being allowed to join the front lines near the end of war. In addition to the Victoria Cross, he also received the Military Medal, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. His Victoria Cross citations reads: "On 29 September 1918 at Terhand, Belgium, when the right flank of his company was held up by enemy machine-guns, Lance-Corporal Seaman went forward under heavy fire with his Lewis gun and engaged the position single-handed, capturing two machine-guns and 12 prisoners, and killing one officer and two men. Later in the day he again rushed another enemy machine-gun post, capturing the gun under very heavy fire. He was killed immediately afterwards, but it was due to his gallant conduct that his company was able to push forward to its objective." His body was never identified. In addition to his commemoration at Tyne Cot Cemetery in West Flanders, Belgium, he is also commemorated on the memorial to the 36th Division at the Ulster Tower near Thiepval, France on the Somme River, the Felixstowe War Memorial in Suffolk, England, and the Scole War Memorial in Norfolk, England. A copy of his Victoria Cross is on display in the Officers Mess at The Royal Logistics Corps Museum in Camberley, Surrey, England.
