MATTHEW TURNER SWEET
On Friday, July 27, 2012, Matt Sweet of Fairfax Station, Virginia, was called to his eternal home four years after a diagnosis of Ocular Melanoma. Matt was the beloved husband of 22 years to Susan and devoted father to his three teen-aged children, Zachary, Natalie and Brittany. He was born in Lansing, Michigan on March 15, 1956 and grew up in East Lansing, Michigan. He is survived by his parents, Douglas and Beverly Sweet and siblings, David (Emmalee), Jonathan, Elizabeth "Annie" (Rex) Alvord, and Jason (Lisa) and a host of many relatives and friends.
Matt was a 1974 graduate of East Lansing High School and a 1978 graduate of Michigan State University, with a major in Business and Economics. Shortly thereafter, he was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, and designated an Infantry Officer. Matt continued to stay active in the Marine Corps Reserves for 28 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was deployed for active duty twice during this time. First, for Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1990 – 1991 and then for Operation Iraqi Freedom at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida in 2004 – 2005. Matt loved the adventure and enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow Marines in serving his country.
In 1983, Matt earned a Master's Degree from the University of Southern California in Systems Management. He began his new civilian career at the Naval Data Automation Command, working as a Budget Analyst. In 1986, he transferred to the Naval Audit Service where he enjoyed working with the many audit teams at various travel locations where he enjoyed the sense of belonging, accomplishment and camaraderie. His last Naval Audit assignment was with the Service Special Audits Division. Matt's friendship with his Navy colleagues endured the test of time and many have stated how much they will miss his easy-going nature, humor and team spirit.
In 1994, Matt started working at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Over the years he held numerous positions in Accounting, Auditing, and Policy. His final position at FERC was a Supervisory Auditor where he was instrumental in establishing the Commission's Internal Auditing Program. He spoke highly of his fellow workers at FERC and they in turn enjoyed his humor, warmth and positive nature.
Those who knew Matt best would know of his inquisitive nature, sense of adventure, and his devotion to his wife and three children. He loved being with his children and tried to never miss an event they were involved in both with school and Church. Some of his favorite family times were spent discussing any topic that would arise in his teasing nature or as a serious concern. He was passionate about helping his son, Zach in Boy Scouts, assisting on campouts and working towards guiding Zach as he achieved his Eagle Scout rank. He loved hiking, biking, reading, watching movies with his children or enjoying a family meal together at a restaurant.
Always curious and truth-seeking, it was only fitting that as Matt knew that cancer would take his life, he focused even more intensely on seeking to learn more about his final destination – God's Kingdom….where he would live forever with his Lord and Savior as well as those loved ones who had gone on ahead of him. We draw tremendous comfort in knowing that due to our faith, our parting from our Beloved Matt is only temporary.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 2, from 3 pm to 5 pm and 6 pm to 8 pm at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 8304 Old Keene Mill Road, Springfield, VA 22152 where funeral services will be held on Friday, August 3 at 10:30 am. Interment at Quantico National Cemetery with military honors at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations can be made in Matt's memory to our Church, Prince of Peace or for our Childrens' college fund. Thank you.
