After suffering for three days with an open safety pin in his intestines, little
Harold, the four-months-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Mahnke, passed away at
Holy Family hospital last night.
The child swallowed the pin Monday night and was removed to the hospital. There
an x-ray revealed the pin was in his stomach. An operation was performed in an
attempt to remove it, but in the meantime the pin had passed down into the
childs intestines and where it was impossible to remove it.
It was expected for a few days that no serious effects would be suffered and
that the child would get along nicely, but Wednesday night he took a turn for
the worse and from then on his condition was critical. Death came at 8:20 last
night.
It is said that the pin was used to fasten the babys bib to his dress, and the
child caught up the edge of the bib and put it in his mouth, the pin becoming
unfastened.
The case is the first of its kind at the local hospital and is said by
physicians to be very rare.
The funeral will be held at the Mahnke home, 504 Buffalo street, at 3 oclock
tomorrow afternoon. The Rev. Karl Machmiller will officiate at the services and
burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
The sympathy of the community is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Mahnke, the latter who
was Miss Ida Giese of this city previous to her marriage.
