Herbert J. Mahnke, 72, of 630 N. Fourth St., Manitowoc, died early Friday
morning at home. He had a heart attack.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church Chapel,
Manitowoc. The Rev. Vernon Anderson will officiate and burial will be in
Evergreen cemetery, Manitowoc.
Mr. Mahnke was born Sept. 23, 1896, at Manitowoc, son of the late Christian
and Bertha Wilsing Mahnke. He had been employed as a malster at Rahr Malting
Co. and at Kingsbury breweries and had operated Pioneer Gas Station for a
period of time. He had been custodian at First Presbyterian Church until
retiring in 1966.
A veteran of World War I, Mr. Mahnke served from Feb. 23, 1915, until May 18,
1919, as a private with Headquarters Co., 127th Infantry. He married Blanche
Wilda Dec. 31, 1921, and had been a member of the Lutheran Brotherhood.
Surviving are his wife, a son, Ashton J. Mahnke, two daughters, Mrs. Albert
(Janet) Franzen and Mrs. Clarence (Edith) Kazda, a brother, Bernard Mahnke,
and three sisters, Mrs. Bertha Duebner, Mrs. Elmer Haupt and Mrs. Hilda Sladky,
of Manitowoc and eight grandchildren. A son, Dean, and three sisters preceded
him in death.
Friends may call at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home, Manitowoc, after 4 p.m.
Sunday until noon Monday when the casket will be moved to the church chapel
where the body will lie in state until time of service. The Lutheran Brotherhood
will conduct a service at 9 p.m. at the funeral home and graveside military rites
will be Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 659.
Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church.
