Herbert W. Mahnke, 87, of 940A N. 11th Street, Manitowoc, died Saturday evening, Sept. 3, at home.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Glenn Unke will officiate with burial at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.
Mr. Mahnke was born Dec. 5, 1895, at Sheboygan, son of the late August and Theresa Walters Mahnke. Mr. Mahnke was a Washington High School graduate of Manitowoc in 1912. For many years he managed the A&P Grocery Store in Two Rivers. He also opened and operated his own grocery store known as Mahnke Grocery Store until his retirement in 1970. He married Ida Giesa in 1919 at First Geramn Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manitowoc. She preceded him in death in 1948 and then he married Ann Zlatohlavek in 1951 at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manitowoc. Mr. Mahnke was a member of the State Grocers Association, member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church where he was a former trustee of the church, and also was a member of the Lutheran Men's Choir of the church for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Ann; one son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Bonnie Mahnke of Milwaukee; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Donald and Carol Swoboda of Two Rivers; two stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and Richard Meyer of Manitowoc, Shirley and Clarence Long of Cleveland, Wis.; a brother and sisterin-law (sic), Arthur and Clara Mahnke of Rockford, Ill., 11 grandchildren, six great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three infant sons and an infant daughter.
Friends may call at Parkside Funeral Home, Manitowoc, 4 o'clock to 9 o'clock this Tuesday evening and Wednesday 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and at the church from noon until the time of service.
