MRS. C. MARTIN DIES, WAS ILL MANY MONTHS
Was Formerly Mrs. Staehle; Funeral Will Be Held Here Wednesday
Suffering from a heart affliction for the last few months and taken seriously
ill six weeks ago, Mrs. Conrad J. Martin, 64, nee Elizabeth Roemer, died early
Sunday morning at the Holy Family hospital. The deceased spent her entire life
in Manitowoc. She was prominent in church and social welfare work and for many
years was closely identified with the industrial life of the community while
serving in a secretarial capacity with the Manitowoc Boiler Works company.
Since their marriage three years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Martin made their home at a
summer home erected at Ravine Park, two miles west of the city.
Funeral services for Mrs. Martin will take place Wednesday at 10 a.m. from St.
Boniface Catholic church of which the deceased was a lifelong member.
The deceased was born in this city March 21, 1869, the daughter of the late Mr.
and Mrs. Jacob Roemer. Her father was a prominent early day hardware merchant
of the city. She was educated in the public schools of the city and was married
here in ____ to Dr. Max Staehle, who later became city health officer.
Mrs. Staehle was for many years with the Manitowoc Boiler Works company before
the plant in the first ward was taken over by the shipyard interests, filling
secretarial capacity. Dr. Staehle died January 8, 1929.
Wed in 1930.
On June ??, ????, Mrs. Staehle was married to Conrad J. Martin who survives her
with two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Kuchera of Wausau and Mrs. William Kappes of
Columbus, Ohio, a half sister, Mrs. James Nachtwey of North Fond du Lac and two
brothers, Richard Q. Roemer of Alameda, Calif., and Charles Roemer of Minneapolis,
Minn.,
a step brother, Edward Kircher of this city and a step mother, Mrs. Anna Roemer,
city, also survive.
Following their marriage three years ago Mr. and Mrs. Martin made their home in
Chicago for a few months and then came to Manitowoc to reside at Ravine Park.
In addition to her church affiliations Mrs. Martin was a member of the St. Theresa
society. St. Ann society and the South Side Ladies Aid society. With the last
named organization she was active in many lines of endeavor for that group.
The remains are at the Pfeffer funeral home where they may be viewed up to the
hour of the funeral Wednesday morning.
