In 1613 he fled to Belgium to escape charges of lewd conduct, the Archbishop of Canterbury having complained, "Bull is as famous for marring of virginity as he is for fingering of organs and virginals." He settled in Antwerp and was organist of the cathedral there when he died. Needless to say he was not the prototype of the famous fictional character John Bull, who symbolizes Britain.
