"Mrs. Julia Barrows Dies at the Ripe Age of 81 After Having Lived a Useful Life."
"After a long and useful life of slightly over 82 years, Mrs. Julia Barrows passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Burleigh Havard, who resides at 2010 16th street, Gulfport, death occurring at 3:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Up until a short time before her death Mrs. Barrows was busy with her grandchildren and the flowers she loved so well. On last Sunday which was her 81st birthday, although she was in bed, her many friends had a big birthday party for her, the house being crowded with those who loved her. Death came because her allotted time had expired and after her work on earth had been finished, for it was her mission to serve others unselfishly. Mrs. Barrows was born in Jackson County, Ala., and was twice married. The first husband was Thomas Scott who was the father of the only children left by Mrs. Barrows. These children are John T. Scott and Mrs. Burleigh Havard, obth of whom reside in Gulfport. Mrs. Barrows has been a widow since 1899, Mr. Barrows having died at that time. She has resided with Mr. and Mrs. Havard for the past 16 years. Her maiden name was Beckett. She was a life long member of the Baptist church. It is the lot of few people to have all of their loved ones at their bedside during the last hours but at the time of Mrs. Barrows' death her only two living children, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild were present. A large number of floral tributes were given by the many friends of the family and of Mrs. Barrows. This token of love would have been highly appreciated by Mrs. Barrows were she living for she loved flowers. The funeral was held this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the Havard home on 16th St. Dr. W. J. Mahoney conducted the funeral service. Mrs. David McDavid, Miss Louise Mahoney, Mrs. C. I. Hendrix, B. C. Bowen and Herbert Grace furnished the music. The pall bearers wer B. C. Bowen, J. L. Taylor, A. A. Mathias, J. B. Pilsbury, L. C. Standifer and A. M. Fishburn. Burial was made at Evergreen Cemetery in Gulfport. Thus begins the real life of a useful, unselfish woman."
