She was the daughter of Julius Anton Huber and Maria "Mary" Wagner. Caroline had eight siblings. She was just nine when her widowed mother passed away just two years after her father. She and her sister Anna were cared for by their older brothers until the state workers sent the younger children to an orphanage in Brooklyn. Caroline and Anna stayed there until Caroline went to the home of a Mrs. Gardner at the age of thirteen to work as a mother's helper. She lived with this family for seven years. She then went to live with the Eisler family who were owner's of a dry goods store and were Orthodox Jews. She stayed with this family until she became married at age of 27 when she married Harry Anslem Begraft on October 19th 1916 in Brooklyn, New York. Family story states that the girls lost contact with their brothers until many years later when Caroline got on a Brooklyn trolley and thought she recognized the driver and asked is your name Charles Huber?
