Born in Pomerania, Prussia, my memories of my Grandma are dim, as I was only five years old when she passed away. I do remember that being in her presence was a wonderful place to be, though! Most of my knowledge of her are through the memories of my mother, Viola. I do remember the day my Grandma died. My mother cried all day. Grandma was only 55 when she passed away from Multiple Myeloma, a bone cancer.
Grandma is remembered as someone who was always there in the neighborhood to lend a helping hand. Her kindness and generosity is still talked about by those who knew her. If a neighbor lady had an occasion, they would always go to Emma and she would refurbish a tired dress to look brand new. Once she even loaned her own shoes for a neighbor lady to wear to a funeral. During the Depression, if someone needed food, they knew they could go to Emma, as she had a knack of "stretching"..."Add another cup of water to the soup, Bert!"
She was a fabulous cook and could turn the most meager ingredients into a meal fit for a king. My mother recalls that as a child, even during the Depression, Grandma always set her table with a lace tablecloth, and none of the boys were allowed at the table without a clean shirt!
Grandma lived a difficult life, as one of her younger sons, John Rodger, was born with cerebral palsy. Although John Rodger had the mind of a genius, he was a total cripple and never walked a day in his life. As a child, the family was told he would not live past the age of 12, but John Rodger lived to be 24 years old because of all the loving care he received from his family. He died about a year before Grandma. Grandma was ill, and when John Rodger died I'm sure she felt her work here was done and she could allow herself to go to her Heavenly Home.
At the time of her death she was survived by her husband, Bert Samsal, her children, Virgil, Joyce, Viola (my mother), Wesley, June and Jean, and a brother, Gustav, of Benson, Minnesota, a sister, Marie, of Ackley, Iowa, and a baby sister, Babe (Elizabeth), of Buffalo, Wyoming. She was preceeded in death by her parents, her son, John Rodger, and an infant son, Bert, Jr.
She is buried in the Sheboygan Falls Cemetery in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, next to her son, John Rodger Samsal. Next to John Rodger is my Grandpa Bert, who died in 1975.
