My dad, Tom was born on April 29, 1951 in Cincinnati, Ohio, along with his twin brother Tim to Walter and Nancy Nickell They lived on a farm unil they were 8 years old. In 1959 their parents packed them up and their older sister, Barbara and moved to Fort Myers, FL. My dad lived there til he graduated high school. After high school he was accepted to Western Carolina University in NC. That is where he met my mom, the future Mrs. Tom Nickell. They were married June 23, 1973. In 1974 they both graduated from Western and moved to Charleston, South Carolina. While there my older sister was born June 20, 1978. Three years later I came along on Sept. 22, 1981. In 1985 we moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. It was a scary time for us, but we adjusted to it. On March 25, 1988 the last of the Nickell girls was born. I am sure my dad would have liked to have a son, but he loved his girls just the same. It was a happy time for us, until March of 2002. We found out that my dad needed by pass surgery. I didn't think such a routine surgery could go so wrong. My dad's surgery was on April 4, 2002. At first things were fine, then we got the news that things weren't. The doctors couldn't get his heart to pump on its own. They didn't know why. For three days he was on total life support. His organs slowly started shutting down. By the third day we knew there was nothing the doctors could do. We made the hardest decision to turn off life support. At 5am on April 7 we got a phone call from his nighttime nurse telling us his pulse was fading and to get to the hospital quickly. We got there just in time. I kissed my dad on his forehead, told him I loved him and I would see him again one day.
