Award-winning journalist. Wrote for The Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones Newswires. Remembered for her persistence and versatility. During her short career, Randall covered the nation's financial crisis. She traveled with former Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner to London, Beijing and Abu Dhabi, and wrote a series of articles that forced the U.S. Treasury to disclose how funds for the Troubled Asset Relief Program were being spent. Randall, the daughter of two trained journalists, graduated from Lakeside High School in DeKalb County,Georgia and attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she majored in journalism and interned at Essence and Newsweek magazines. She received a master's degree in public affairs reporting from the University of Maryland. Randall worked at Money magazine and in the Platt division of McGraw-Hill before being hired at The Wall Street Journal at the age of 25 to report on the energy industry. She was first diagnosed with leukemia in 2009, and she underwent aggressive treatments. After a brief remission, the cancer flared again in 2012. During illness she received two stem cell transplants, and at one point spent five days in the hospital receiving five different types of chemotherapy. She also was twice struck with the flu and pneumonia at the same time. In recent months prior to death, she had been in Atlanta for treatment. Randall passed away in Atlanta at the age of 33 in her husband's arms from a rare form of leukemia. She is survived by her husband, a son, her parents, her brother, two sisters, a grandmother and a host of other relatives and friends.

Contributions can be made in her honor to the Maya J. Randall Memorial Fund; which supports other young families impacted by cancer; to promote spiritual growth in times of challenges; and to provide opportunities for others to pursue her passion in journalism-by creating an academic scholarship.
