Gertrude Emily Johnson was the youngest of 7 children born to Hugh & Elva (Race) Johnson. She graduated from Marlette High School in 1924. Shortly after her graduation, on August 6th, 1924, she married Clifton John Riley, who was a schoolmate of hers. Gertrude's friends had told her they had set her up on a blind date, and she told them that was fine, as long as it wasn't that redhead named Clifton! Sure enough, it was him, and they ended up together.

After they were married, they owned the Riley's Dairy Bar & Creamery in Mayville for many years, and then relocated to Standish where they owned the Dairy Delight.

Gertrude and Clifton were the parents of two sons, Richard and Paul. Their two sons gifted them with 14 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and many great-great-grandchildren.

She loved to spend time with her family, and enjoyed watching the Detroit Tigers play. She was a long-time member of Dayton Center Church along with her husband. Grandma was also a big fan of Kentucky Fried Chicken! She was a very kind and loving grandmother to her many grandkids, and she is greatly missed. ♥
