Detective Brann was a 20-year veteran of the Battle Creek Police Department. He was honored as the Officer of the Year in 2002. He was also Vice President of the Pennfield school district. On May 9th, Brann went to an apartment complex to interview a woman and her mother. Detective Brann was dressed in plainclothes and didn't have on a bulletproof vest. Detective Brann went to the front of the apartment complex, while his partner went to the rear of the building, his partner Detective Huggett heard gunshots fired from the front of the complex. That is where he encountered Genail Postley, the two men exchanged gunfire, and the detective was shot in a leg while the suspect fled the scene. Officers found Brann shot in the stairwell of the complex.
