Last night our sister, Laurel Maxine Haugen Paulson went into that good night and rejoined her loved ones who had made the passage before her. She left behind all pain, anxiety and frustration with the savage physical and mental limits imposed upon her for the last few years. She also left behind the makings of a family legend that will be burnished by her several nephews and nieces and their offspring for many generations to come. Jo was there, of course. Ever the loving daughter and faithful aide de camp following the detailed instructions of her mother who had earned and relished the sobriquet, She Who Must Be Obeyed. However, Maxie was far from a tyrant or a dictator but, rather fit the Mattie Ross role of knowing what she wanted and how what she wanted was to be exactly done. She exhibited "true grit" in herself and expected it from others. We who acquiesced to SWMBO's instructions did so out of love for her and the game she was playing and with the knowledge that she was probably right and selfishly saving ourselves from a whole lot of thinking.
For a long time, there has been the five of us. Deloris, who has incorporated more of life's lessons than any of us and continues to learn from those lessons with a discriminating taste while stubbornly refusing to let age slow her down. Percy, the emotional center of our family and the quintessential good person. Lawrence (Larry) who incorporates the best parts of military discipline and focus and shares the military's love of gadgets. Me, who has always used humor as my lens for viewing humanity and who has far too many times shown a unfortunate and unholy love of confrontation. And Maxie, who concentrated all of these traits into an industrial strength personality. A strong family full of love but, until recently, incapable of expressing that love. Let our lesson be your lesson.

Maxine Paulson, 80, of Bemidji, MN, died Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at Neilson Place, Bemidji.
Memorial Services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 18, 2013 at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji with Pastor Kent Dudley officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Inurnment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji.
Laurel Maxine Haugen was born at her grandparents' home south of Gully, MN on August 13, 1932 to Lawrence and Myrtle (Paulson) Haugen. As the middle child, she was always the most balanced and modest one.
After attending rural school, Maxine graduated from Bemidji High School in 1949, and after a short time at Bemidji State Teachers College, went to work for Sears as the credit manager. It was here that she met her future husband, Wallace Paulson. They married, in Bemidji, on July 14, 1956, and had 2 children, Julie and Joy.
Maxine then worked for ISD 31 for 26 years. As a librarian, she ensured all her family knew how to correctly inventory books and return chairs to their proper positions. She also developed lifelong friends in Diane and Ray Klasen, Becky and Jeff Foster and Pat and Gordie Vance. Her holiday meals for the couples were legendary.
She is survived by daughter, Jo; grand dog, Star; Sister, Deloris Ringstad and 3 brothers, Percy (Virginia), Larry (Mary) and Lee (Kathy). Amongst her many nieces and nephews, Corky Ringstad always held a special spot in her heart. Mention must also be made of the wonderful friendship with Wally's cousin, Joan (Dave) Allen.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wally; daughter, Julie Kern and grand dog, Miss Pea.
