My Daddy....

Daddy was the only one of his siblings to actually be born in Texas-a fact that he was very proud of! He was born in San Antonio and died in Houston, leaving his beloved state only while serving in the Navy. He was stationed in Norfolk Va. when he was involved in a car accident that left him with injuries serious enough to warrant a medical discharge from the service. While hospitalized, he met my mother when she came to visit a friend of hers. The two married April 4, 1964 and I came along 9 months and 11 days later! Daddy had been complaining of headaches for awhile before his death but the doctors just attributed them to the injuries he suffered several years earlier. His death was due to an undiagnosed sinus infection that had traveled to his brain. My mother had recently found out that she was pregnant with my sister when Daddy died.

Daddy was survived by his wife, Brenda; his daughters, Heather Lynn and Ann Stewart (born after his death). His mother & stepfather, Doris & Carl Branch; father & step-mother, Art, Sr & Rhonda Oswald. Also survived by his sister Elaine (Ted) Harris; brother Arthur, Jr (Jodine); and numerous nieces and nephews, including a nephew named after him. He is also the grandfather to Taylor, Clay, Caroline, & Mary Margaret

The following is a poem that I wrote at age 17.

In Memory of My Daddy

Traffic pulls over
Pedestrians bow their heads
The escort goes on
The hearse drives slow
They have reached the cemetery
The family car stops
I see Mommy step out
Her family comes to support her
Daddy's family is there
Though I can't find Daddy
Everyone walks over to the empty grave
Listens to the minister
All are dressed in black
Everyone is crying
Mommy says something
They lay the casket in the grave
All turn to leave
All but Mommy
Mommy drops two things into the grave--
A stem of Heather from his daughter
And a tear from the child she carries
They laid my Daddy in that grave
Goodbye, Daddy
I love you
