John was raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa excelling in both football and track in high school and at the University of Chicago. He married Louise Huffaker in Chicago on April 15, 1941. They were the parents of John, Dorian, and Mark. After serving as a naval signal officer on a light aircraft carrier and an escort aircraft carrier in the Pacific during World War II, he lived in Western Springs, Illinois and worked in Chicago as a commodities broker with: Zimmerman, Alderson, & Carr; Chicago Brokerage Company; and his own John Davenport Company. After they divorced, Louise passed away in 1973. He married Mary Elizabeth Gillen on December 12, 1981 in Oak Brook, Illinois. They lived in Chicago until his retirement and then spent their summers in Whitehall, Michigan and winters in Corona del Mar, California. He enjoyed crossword puzzles and playing golf with friends in both locations and rarely took mulligans other than on the first tee.
