In February 1942, a month before the Dutch East Indies surrendered to Japan on March 9th, Charles Uyterelst and all fellow students of the Dutch Navy Air force were flown to Australia to continue their pilot training there. However because of a shortage of air bases in Australia the plan was changed and they left for the USA, where at the Jackson Air Base in Mississippi The Royal Netherlands Military Flying School was established under the direction of General van Oyen. The Flying School operated from May 1942 until February 1944.
While on a training mission in an AT-6 aircraft from Tyndall Air Force Field, Panama City FL to Jackson MS, Charles Uyterelst Reserve 2nd Lieutenant Navy Aviator died on 18 September 1943, in a plane crash north of Meridian in bad weather from a tropical storm.
He is buried at Cederlawn cemetery in the Dutch Flyer Plot located in Lot 49 Section 41. The cemetery is located on West Capitol Street, in Jackson, MS (Hinds county) near the Livingston Park and MS Old Ladies Home.
