John Edward Merriss was born in Denton, Texas, to William W. and Justina Paschall Merriss. His paternal grandparents were
Joseph S. Merriss born 1820 in Chagrin Twp., Cuyahoga County Ohio, and Sarah Walkup of Pennsylvania. And maternal grandparents Grace Abner and Luther Paschal.

Native American Background:
His mother, grandmother (Grace Abner) and great-grandmother (Sarah Tocus) were Pequot Indians, adopted into the Peoria Indian Tribe of Oklahoma June 1864, while his mother was a small child.

For a time, John was a teacher on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in South Dakota. After this endeavor, he returned to Ottawa County Oklahoma and was married to Sarah "Sadie" Walker around 1902, and started their family. Born in Portland, Oregon, Sadie was the daughter of Jacob J. Walker and Laura Bisby.

In the year 1913, John and Sadie moved their young family to Tulare County California, where they raised their children, and lived there until their deaths.
