Kent was the only child of Bill and Mae (Sullivan) Shields. He had a half-brother, William Shields, and a half-sister, Theresa Shields Hagerty. Kent grew up in Milton, MA. He was a gifted athlete and graduate of St. Sebastian's Country Day School. During his college years at Villanova, he played Lacrosse, and intramural sports of Rugby and Baseball. He was active in the Spanish and Psychology clubs. He graduated from Villanova University in PA in May 1966 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He married Marilyn "Marla" A. Mawhinney on 20 Mar 1976 at St Paul Church, Wellesley, Norfolk, MA.

Kent began his military service in the US Army on 01 March 1967 and served a tour in Vietnam earning the Bronze Star Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster (2nd award). It was during that tour that he was exposed to the chemicals in Agent Orange. Over time that exposure would lead to many physical and mental challenges and ultimately contribute to his untimely death at the age of 53. He leaves his wife Marla and two daughters; Taylor and Alexcia.

Devoted father of Taylor and Alexcia Shields both of Sudbury, son of Mary (Sullivan) and the late William Shields of Milton. Brother of Theresa Hagerty of Danvers and William Shields of Florida. Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Fatima Church. Interment Mass National Cemetery, Bourne.
