Alene Wilson Russ was born in Dog Creek, Kentucky. The youngest daughter of Bedford and Pernie Meredith Wilson. She grew up with three brothers: Clint, Herbert, and Bobby. Six sisters: Flossie, Ollie, Rada, Elva, Hazel, and Nova. They were a very close and very musical family. Alene learned to play the guitar and sing at a very early age. She moved to Louisville in her teens and began her long singing career. She had 1 son, James Garland, born in 1940. He died in 1981. She played on all the local radio stations from the 1930s to the late 1950s. She was a singer and rhythm guitar player with Clayton "Pappy" McMichen and his Georgia Wildcats. Pappy was famous for writing quite a few well known songs that are still played today, such as "Peach Picking Time in Georgia," "Bile the Cabbage Down," and "In the Pines," among others. He was a world reknowned fiddle player and won too many championships to count. His fiddle and other items are in the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee. They played all over the local area for many years, such as at "Hal's Furniture Store," a local store that had an afternoon radio show.They also played on WAVE & WHAS Radio station. She traveled with his band for many years until his death. She was a lifetime member of the Louisville Musicians Union. She was buried wearing her 50 year pin. She traveled to Germany in the early 1960s with her husband, an Army Sgt. She continued to play music even in Germany where she sat in for several bands. She had one daughter, Rebecca, who is the only direct family member to outlive her. She was a Grandmother, and a Great-Grandmother and a Great-Great-Grandmother. She continued to play music locally with her nephews and local groups doing family Country music shows. She passed away after a lingering illness in Meadows South nursing home, with her daughter Rebecca, son-in-law Roger and her beloved Grandson, Jason, by her side. Her visitation and funeral were held at Foreman Funeral Home, in Jeffersontown, Kentucky this is where her daughter, Rebecca works. She was buried next to her son, Jimmy Garland. She was the last remaining Wilson family member to pass away. The Family Circle is now complete.
