Shayna was one of those people that you knew walked into a room... because you could just feel the energy change for the better. She had a smile that was radiant and infectious. She had a soul that was pure and a heart that was kind. She could always make you laugh. She had the voice of an angel. Her dreams were that of love and happiness. I can't remember her ever speaking a negative word about anyone. She was the one telling others to stop... that it wasn't nice. She was so fun. She knew how to make any situation better and brighter. She definitely lived to the best of her ability while she was here. She gave as much as she got... maybe even more. What the world lost... the day we lost her... is too great for words.
She is fondly remembered and greatly missed by all those who had the pleasure and honor of knowing her.
A Story about Shayna:
Shayna and I met when we attended CCD together. One day her and I were sitting next to each other for one reason or another and we couldn't move from our seats, perhaps it was a test. So we got to quietly chit chatting and some how we got on the topic of death. At that time I never knew this conversation would become such an important one in my life, but I remember Shayna telling me how if she died (as in that day or time frame) she would be forgotten. Her parents and family would remember her but certain people, like friends, would grow older and eventually forget all about her. She was talking about how life was odd like that and how who remembered you changed with the different age that you die at. I also remember her speaking how it must be so sad to be older in life and watch all your friends and loved ones pass before you all the time. It was a very deep and emotional conversation between us, regardless of the age. Like friends do, I told her she was crazy and that no one would ever forget her. And I remember saying to Shayna, I promise you no matter what if I know you when you die that I will never forget you. She promised me the same. We sealed the deal with the sacred pinky promise, lol. Maybe Shayna knew something the rest of us didn't. Maybe God knew of her fears and saddness of growing old and watching everyone she loved die before her, but I do know one thing, it wasn't too long after that conversation that she passed away. I'll never forget the moment I learned that Shayna passed away. I closed my eyes and with a heavy heart assured her that I would keep my promise. I just want to say thank you to all of you who visit Shayna. I am sure there are so many people who don't visit this site that think of this beautiful angel and smile in memory, but it's so nice to know that I was right when I told her she would never be forgotten.
(I wrote this poem for Shayna shortly after she passed. It was published in her honor when I was in 9th grade)
IN LOVING MEMORY OF SHAYNA
A friend is now at rest,
For a safer place she remains.
A world of goodness and beauty,
A world without worry or pain.
No fear will she encounter,
For a better place she'll be,
A place where the sick are healed
And where blinded eyes can see.
Our world has forever changed.
Our lives are not the same,
But close within our hearts,
Her precious face remains.
We give to her our tears
And our prayers we send above.
We cherish all the memories
Filled with happiness and love.
She'll have someone to depend on,
A helping hand is there to lend,
For the Father shall be watching
And in heaven she'll have a friend.
This battle is faced head on,
Many obstacles to overcome,
but in the end, together
This battle will be won.
