John was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on January 20, 1920, to John James Meyers and Mora Struble. His sister, born May 16, 1916, was named Jean Elizabeth. He married Margaret Alice Keith on September 13, 1941,in Franklin, Pennsylvania. He served in World War II from September 1943 until September 1945, serving in Europe under General Patch in the Seventh Army. John was a draftsman, drawing maps from aerial photographs. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service and was honorably discharged. He told me with great pride that he had learned in the army that his I.Q. was 164. This may have had a bearing on his having been assigned to Army Intelligence during World War II.
After his stint in the army, John attended and graduated from Allegheny College, Meadville, Pennsylvania, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree. He did his thesis for graduation on "The Effects of Militarization on German Education." He told me that his professor gave him a "B" grade because he did not know how to grade the paper.
After graduating college, he then taught history and coached basketball near Springboro, Pennsylvania.
He and his wife, Margaret, had three children: Margaret Kathleen (November 3, 1942), Lisbeth Jean (February 22, 1950), and Steven Keith (May 20, 1952). John and Margaret moved from Meadville, Pennsylvania, to Los Angeles, California, in 1950 or 1951, settling in Long Beach, California, in 1952.
For many years, John was employed as a topographical draftsman for Mobil Oil, first in Vernon, California, and later in Santa Fe Springs, California.
He loved jazz, reading, camping, a good steak (with a salad), westerns (movies and TV shows), basketball, dogs, and his home in Long Beach. His secret wish was to own a sailboat.
John and Margaret divorced in June of 1965. He lost his wife and his family and never recovered from the divorce. He began drinking heavily and never lived a normal life again. John died at Redlands Community Hospital, Redlands, California, on January 6, 1979. He was a good, kind and gentle man. Rest in peace. May we all trust in Jesus Christ.
