Grover “Mac” McNeely, Jr., 83, Peru, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2006, at Miller's Merry Manor Nursing Home, Peru.

He was born on June 26, 1922 in Indianapolis, the son of Grover A. McNeely, Sr. and Cora (Buck) McNeely. He married Madelyn “Jean” Burgard on April 13, 1946 and she survives.

Grover was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.

He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and served with the tank destroyer battalion in Hodges' First Army. He was held as a prisoner of war for four months at the Prisoner of War Stalag Camp 11-B after being captured in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge on Dec. 17, 1944. For serving his country, the decorated veteran earned many military ribbons including the Purple Heart, the World War II Victory Medal with bronze stars which he received for honorable service while a Prisoner of War, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign ribbon, the World War II ribbon, the National Defense Ribbon and others.

Survivors other than his wife include his daughters, Jo McNeely, Peru, Judith Buzard, Mesa, Ariz., and Karen Specht, Winter Haven, Fla.; grandchildren Lori, Mindy, Tracey, TyAnn, Jeff, Robert and Tiffany; several great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild, Jordan.


McNeely was preceded in death by both parents, a brother, three sisters and a grandchild, Thad.

Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home with Pastor Tony Winters and Pastor Ron Shaner officiating.

Before burial there will be a military committal service at Mount Hope Cemetery, Peru.

Visitation is Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions can be made to First Church of the Nazarene.
