My mother, Elizabeth (Betty) Marie Johns Meyer was born in East Orange NJ in December of 1920 to Francis Johns and Catherine Johns. The family moved to Long Beach CA in the mid 20's. She had one brother, Robert Donald Johns, who was seven years younger than her. She adored her brother Bob.

She went to school in Long Beach where she attended David Starr Jordan High School and there met my father, William Meyer. The two became high school sweethearts.

When my father went off to war, my mother worked in a defense plant. My father was shot and sent back to the states. This is when they were married. Three years later they started their family and had three children. Judith, Jenelle, and William.

They bought their home in Lakewood CA in 1950 and it is the home my mother stayed in until her passing in 2002. She loved her home and being a wife and mother. She was always PTA president, or Girl Scout leader, or bowling league member. She and my father enjoyed neighborhood dances, card parties with friends, and holidays with family. She was the mom who could come up with anything overnight. Like a costume that a child forgot they needed the next day, or three dozen cupcakes when another child volunteered her for a classroom party.

After her children got older she returned to work. Sometimes in my fathers store, sometimes for others, mostly being a bookkeeper.

She is survived by three children, Judy, Jenelle and Bill and three grandchildren, Teri, Melissa and Joey.

My mother helped me raise my son Joseph from the time he was born, we lived with her for 16 yrs, and they loved each other dearly. It was like he had two moms.

We miss her dearly.

God saw you getting tired
A cure was not to be,
So he put his arms around you
And whispered
"Come with me"
And with tearful eyes
I watched you fade away
Although I loved you dearly,
you could not stay.
A loving heart stopped beating,
Hard working hands at rest.
God broke my heart to prove,
He only takes the best.
Each time I see your picture,
You seem to smile at me and say,
Don't cry I am in God's hands
We will meet again someday

Thanks so much to Judy Winstead for sponsoring my mother's site. You're an angel.
