Robert Carson Hewett was born in NYC, the son of John M. and Mary Hewett. Between 1828 and 1831 he attended Miami and Transylvania University. From 1831 to 1837 he was employed as a surveyor and engineer. He became an M.D., and during the Civil War was the acting Assistant Surgeon of the USA for the Union soldiers that were stationed in Louisville. He also provided free medical care for a local orphanage. He married Joanna Sidney Anderson and together they had three children. He died at his home in Louisville at 7:30 am, and after a funeral service at Christ Church, he was buried on 24 December 1891.
"I, Robert Carson Hewett of Louisville Kentucky make and declare this my last will.
I devise to my beloved wife J. Sidney Hewett my house and lot on Third Street in Louisville Ky together with the household furniture and other contents of said house.
I also devise to her fifty thousand dollars worth of my brst[?] dividend paying stocks to be estimated at their par value. But this amount of stock shall not all be of one kind but shall be made up out of at least three kinds of stock.
I devise also to my wife my lot in Cavehill Cemetery, my horse and carriage I may own at my death and after payment of my debts all money on hand and the proceeds of all notes accounts and claims that may be owing to me at the time of my death.
All my remaining property real and personal of every description and wherever situated shall be divided equally in two parts one of which parts shall go to my son Edward A. Hewett, and the other part shall go in trust to the Fidelity Trust and Safety Vault Company of Louisville Ky for the sole and separate use of my daughter Mary S. Beasley during her life free from the control of her husband and after her death the same shall go to the issue of her body with such conditions as may be designated by my daughter if she so desire in an instrument in the nature of a last will.
The trustee for my daughter shall with her consent have power to sell any or all of said trust property devised to her provided the proceeds of such sale shall be as soon as possible re-invested in profitable stocks or profitable real estate which shall be held by said trustee in like manner and upon like trust the property so sold was held.
Said trustee shall pay over to my daughter at least semi annually the net income and profit of said trust estate and her receipt shall be full acquiescence therefore.
This devise to my daughter I have in trust, not through any feeling of distrust towards my esteemed son-in-law Wm F. Beasley, but to guard so far as possible against the casualties of business in which he is or may be engaged.
To my son I give my watch and such of my books as he may wish to own and to my daughter I give my portrait by Benoir Irwin
I appoint my wife and my son E. A. Hewett my executors and desire that no security be required of them.
